ABOUT THE COURSE
This beginners’ evening workshop in wildflower identification is suitable for anyone who wants to get more familiar with our native wildflowers. The course will include a tour of some of our beautiful wildflower meadows at The Sustainability Centre, where you will learn the names and defining features of a selection of wildflowers and become confident in telling the difference between similar plants using specific botanical features. This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to independently take your learning further.
THE COURSE WILL GIVE YOU
- An understanding of the key botanical features useful for identifying wildflowers
- Skills to identify a selection of common wildflowers
- Participants will be provided with a handout to take away.
THIS COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR
Beginners - for anyone who would like to improve their wildflower identification skills. This evening ID session will be held outdoors in all but the most extreme weathers so please make sure you follow the 'what to bring/wear advice below. This course will involve walking downhill to our Wild Flower Meadows and uphill to the main building on uneven ground, if you have any mobility worries, please contact us before booking.
WHAT TO BRING/WEAR
- Please bring waterproofs or other weather-appropriate clothing including a hat. This course will go ahead in all weathers unless monsoonal, in which case samples will be taken inside for the ID session
- Walking boots or stout shoes suitable for uneven terrain
- Notepad and pencils/pens and camera
- A roll of clear sellotape for collecting samples to stick in your notepad, if it is dry
- A small ruler
- Long trousers are recommended to provide protection from ticks
- A hand lens (if you own one)
- A water bottle and a snack if you wish
ABOUT THE TUTOR
Rachael Mairey has been creating and managing wildflower meadows at The Sustainability Centre for over a decade. All meadow areas and projects you will see and experience on this course, Rachael has co-ordinated and worked on personally. She has a keen interest in, and love of, the natural world, recognising the importance of enhancing and preserving its biodiversity. She is seriously passionate about plants and has a specialist knowledge of the British Flora.
Rachael worked for the Hiller Gardens for 5 years before embarking on an Environmental Science degree and Masters, specialising in Ecology and Biodiversity. She then worked for Plantlife and joined the Sustainability Centre in 2011.
