ABOUT THE TUTOR
Sara is a Forest School Practitioner working with urban children in Portsmouth to reconnect primary school children with the natural world. She is a biologist by training (her PhD is in forest entomology) and discovered Forest School while on a career breaking looking after her baby son. She set up Eco Urban Ranger in 2010 and works with a number of schools in the Portsmouth area. As part of her commitment to high quality outdoor work she is an Accredited Practitioner of the Institute for Outdoor Learning and co-founder and lead of the Nature Premium Campaign – calling for the government to guarantee regular and ongoing nature experiences for all children and young people. Sara counts herself lucky to work with Portsmouth schools that are committed to teaching their children in a creative way. Learning how to build a clay oven was part of an ambition to ‘grow a loaf of bread’ in school to help reconnect the children with food production. Nobody said how large the loaf was going to be, so together with the children she grew wheat and built a clay oven on the school site. Following this experience, she built another clay oven in her back garden so that she could experiment with clay oven cooking. She still thinks about the pizza she made during her clay oven building course, it was the best pizza she has ever eaten. There is something about the simplicity of cooking in a clay oven, the wood, the fire, fresh air and good company that makes for a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
