ABOUT THE COURSE
Learn how to use plants and herbal remedies to improve your health and wellbeing on this highly practical one day course in the Hampshire South Downs. Spend a day with professional herbalist, Sarah Hillyer, learning how to identify and use medicinal herbs growing in our gardens and the wider countryside to detoxify and revitalise the body.
You will discover how to use all your senses to forage for and identify plants around The Sustainability Centre and learn how to dry herbs to make teas, make your own alcohol and glycerol-based tinctures, infused oils and salves. Sarah will also teach you knowledge of the body’s anatomy and physiology. You will be provided with herbal monographs about the herbs you explore as well as a comprehensive booklist. We will make a nettle and herb soup for lunch. At the end of the day you will have the beginnings of your own medicine chest to share with family and friends and a deepened pool of resources and resilience to face life’s challenges.

THE COURSE WILL GIVE YOU
- Ability to identify and dry a range of medicinal herbs, flowers, and leaves.
- Have knowledge of the various properties of medicinal herbs.
- Experience of making tinctures, infused oils and salves to start your own medicine chest.
- You will take home recipe sheets and herb monographs.
- Your very own herbal tinctures, oils and salves from the herbs you have gathered.
THE COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR
Beginners and anyone wishing to improve their knowledge of herbal medicine.
WHAT TO BRING
- Outdoor clothing & sturdy footwear
- Indoor shoes for the classroom
- Notebook and pen
- A camera
- A thermos flask for hot water to make herbal teas
- Two empty airtight jam jars - one of around 200-250ml in size and one around 150ml in size
- Sharp scissors or pairing knife if you have one (for cutting leaves)
ABOUT THE TUTOR
Sarah Hillyer is a herbalist working in Dorset and Hampshire. Sarah has a degree in Phytotherapy (herbal medicine) and a Diploma in Nutrition, which has given her a comprehensive knowledge of modern medical theory and medicinal plants. Sarah has over 30 years of teaching experience, with particular skills working with people with special needs.
