Low Impact Buildings
​KS2 

Pupils will first explore the site on an informative tour highlighting greener home initiatives in working practice, with the opportunity to ask questions and learn about different materials and their uses. 

Then they will gain first-hand experience experimenting with a variety of different eco-friendly building materials. Working with Cobb (mix of clay and sand), with earth bags and rammed earth. They will develop an understanding of how an earth oven is built, how an earth bag arch can be made to carry their weight and how to create an earthen wall using only compaction.

Depending on the programme, additional activities can include weaving willow into a mini fence or making a model roof using miniature wooden shingles illustrating waterproofing.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get really hands-on and get a feel for the materials. Pupil’s will learn that they can handle materials effectively and gain knowledge of simple eco-building processes.
