  • Find out more about sustainability and food https://www.52climateactions.com/farm
Curriculum Links
  • KS2 Design and Technology - understand seasonality, and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.
  • KS2 Science - identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat.
  • KS2 Science - recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents.

Local Food and Farming
KS2

Pupils embark on an exciting and informative safari tractor trailer ride across Lower Farm lands. Local farmer George Atkinson, or his son Will, engage pupils with many aspects of farm life. Depending on the seasons pupils will see crops and animals and learn how the farm is managed with respect for the environment (Spring is a great time for younger children to see lambing).

Pupils are out and about for two hours with George or Will, who are great at relating to young people of all ages. This is a stimulating adventure especially for pupils who are not familiar with the countryside.

Back at the Centre there's a variety of activities available to continue pupils learning including; matching raw food ingredients to their packaged finished product, playing the banana game focused on FairTrade, choosing a healthy meal debating organic, local or supermarket retailers and food miles. This allows pupil’s to place their experience on the farm in a more global context. Look at our food around the world pictures and discuss sustainability - can we afford to or do we choose to take these options?
