If your answer is ‘yes!’, then come along to our Green Homes Talk and Tour Event. At this first in a series of events in 2023, you’ll hear from experts on the importance of reducing emissions from the UK's housing stock, how retrofit plans can help home owners and all you need to know about heat pumps.  There will be a series of short talks, followed by a Q&A session and the opportunity to take an external tour of our recently eco-renovated building - the South Downs Eco Lodge.

Find out how we eco-renovated our Eco Lodge
The Sustainability Centre carried out a retrofit project on our Eco Lodge which was completed in 2021. A 1970s former MOD building was transformed to meet the highest energy efficiency standards. The materials of the building were maximised to reduce energy demand, by metaphorically wrapping it up with a thermal blanket. The greenest solution to every aspect of the renovation was considered, from the external cladding and heating system to the furniture and lampshades.

Why make changes to your home?
The UK has the most poorly insulated houses in the whole of Europe and a quarter of our carbon emissions come from our homes. We can make changes to reduce how much energy our homes use - this benefits our energy bills and makes our homes greener. The UK will not meet the carbon emissions cuts needed to stabilise our climate, without prioritising making our homes more energy efficient.

What is ‘retrofit’?
Any improvements to existing homes to improve their energy efficiency is called ‘retrofit’ and can encompass improving insulation, upgrading to a heat pump or installing solar panels. 

Event Speakers

• Paul Ciniglio (The National Energy Foundation and Sustainability Centre Trustee) will be talking about: A roadmap to zero emission housing - new build and retrofitting existing homes. Paul will take a look at the direction of national travel towards achieving zero emissions from our housing stock. He will outline key Government milestones enroute to 2050, challenges needing to be navigated, examples of standards and solutions including the need for decarbonisation of heat.
• Patricia Exley from Petersfield Climate Action Network (PeCAN) will be talking about home retrofit plans and the Superhomes Project.
• Bean Beanland from the Heat Pump Association will be talking about heat pumps.
