ABOUT THE COURSE
How do we, as outdoor practitioners, embody story and metaphor and work with stories
that move from hero and conquering to partnership and community?
When humans share stories extraordinary things happen...sometimes it brings unity
between strangers when some enters into someone else’s world through narrative and
metaphor. Storytelling has been the way we share ideas, social mores, hazards and humour
since Homo Sapiens could communicate. It is a universal way of establishing and
maintaining culture and stories can help us to understand or inspire and influence others to
make connections with concepts in a fully immersive way. Indeed it is stories that change
the world - often repeated so often that they become the norm such as the seemingly never
ending “power over” rather than “power with”. We are in an era of huge change. especially
when realising our relationship the more- than-human.
During this workshop we will work with myth (our own and the bigger societal myths) and
the more-than-human to craft our stories from the wild world in all its interconnectedness.
What happens when we move beyond being rescued by the sword wielding hero to instead
the more-than-human community saving the day? What are the stories that demonstrate
connectedness, cooperation, community, partnership, reciprocity?

ABOUT THE TUTOR
Jon Cree has almost forty years’ experience as an environmental/earth educator and trainer. His passion is helping others ‘get in touch’ with the natural world through dynamic learning programmes and hand-on learning experiences. He has for many years worked in Forest School, particularly with learners who are often stressed by our education system, home circumstances or other situations that set them apart from 'the mainstream'. And yet we all bring gifts to the communities we are part of. During the pandemic signs of stress, anxiety and even trauma have become more prevalent and Jon has been diving deeper in 'somatics' and body based approaches. He has been asked to run even more trainings on anxiety, stress and trauma, and how the more than human world and creative practises can support our nervous systems. This is based on the many years he has worked with young people, especially adolescents.
