The Sustainability Centre was set up by the Earthworks Trust in 1995 as an independent learning and study centre, a beacon for sustainability and an award-winning social enterprise charity in the heart of Hampshire's South Downs. With a holistic, practical and creative approach to education the Sustainability Centre is here to explore how we can all make greener, healthier and more ethical choices.
During the past 21 years we have grown into one of the leading centres for outdoor learning and environmental education and we need more indoor space to provide classrooms, offices and community facilities to match demand and interest in practical knowledge, skills, technologies and lifestyle choices that we promote. We also need to update and upgrade our former MoD building to showcase who we are what we do.
We work with schools, community groups and like-minded organisations attracting local people and visitors from all over the world. We are proud to welcome around 20,000 visitors here a year - visiting our natural burial site, walking The South Downs Way national trail, staying in our hostel and campsite and attending our events, courses and cafe. In addition to this, we host over 3,000 pupil visits, via the schools programme, and around 7,800 visitors and learners taking part in our courses programme and staying with us each year.
The limitations of our existing building could be overcome with a change of layout, upgrading to modern eco-standards and extending and transforming the look and eco performance.
This would mean we could keep up with demand; offer more courses; accommodate a whole year group instead of just one class at a time; host more community activities; offer a home to start-up eco and green businesses and provide a hub for rural enterprise.
