Sustainable Sewing

An exciting collaboration between The Sustainability Centre and Joy to Create has resulted in a new course entitled "Learn to Sew". Set in The Sustainability Centre's facilities in East Meon near Petersfield, Hampshire. The new course starts in February and is aimed at getting people started on their sewing journey. Beginning with the basics, using a sewing machine, this one day course concludes in making a beautiful cushion to take home.

If you have ever wanted to mend clothes, make something new from old items or even make to sell but didn't know how to use a sewing machine then this course is for you.

Joy says "we meet a lot of people, young and not so young, who have never learnt to sew, some learnt at school but have never done any since. They didn't believe they could ever make something themselves but continue to be amazed as they develop their skills to make a cushion during the day. Attending further day courses sees them making a beautiful child's dress on day 2 and a skirt for themselves on day 3. We have customers who have attended our learn to sew courses and are now making and selling hats, up-cycled bags from old clothes and children's clothes in a very short space of time"

Joy is a very patient, supportive and caring teacher who possesses the skills that enable people to flourish. She aims to nurture self-esteem and confidence in a supportive and calm environment. All materials for this course are provided and attendees can bring their own sewing machines or there will be a number of new Pfaff machines available to hire for a very small fee.
