Suitably enough, the Sustainability Centre is itself a living exercise in recycling: our buildings and land were previously occupied by the armed forces.
From 1941 to 1993, it was home to the Royal Navy's Communications Branch and Special Communications Unit. This is why you are greeted by a military guard house as you arrive, and our land still bears the traces of disused tennis courts, huts and military paraphernalia.
We like to think our 'operation' is rather more suited to this pastoral haven.
